Long ago, Tortoise had a smooth, shiny shell— round as a pebble, bright as the sun. And he LOVED showing it off.

Tortoise walked proudly through the forest. “Look at my shell!” he shouted. “It’s so shiny you can see your whiskers in it!” Hippo groaned. Lion sighed, “Here he goes again…” Flamingo blinked and flapped her wings.

And Tortoise didn’t stop. “Hippo, look at all your wrinkles!” he called. “Flamingo, standing on one leg? Really?” “Lion, your mane is so messy!” The animals huffed and whispered, “He’s getting ruder every day…”

Up in a tall tree, Owl watched quietly. She ruffled her feathers. “Tortoise needs a lesson,” she murmured. “A gentle one… but a lesson.” The birds leaned closer, listening eagerly.

At sunrise the birds announced, “A party! A Sky Party! Floating in the clouds today!” Animals danced and cheered. Tortoise gasped, eyes wide. “A party in the SKY? I simply MUST attend!”

Owl tilted her head. “But dear Tortoise… you don’t have wings.” Tortoise puffed himself up proudly. “I’ll behave! I’ll be polite! Just let me come!” The birds exchanged a knowing look. “Well… perhaps.”

Owl flew down.“Friends, one feather, please,” she said. The birds nodded. Each bird plucked one soft feather. Red, yellow, blue and green. Soon there were two bright wings for Tortoise.

“Positions!” Flamingo called. “Big flaps!” squawked Parrot. Tortoise flapped. And flapped. And flapped. He flew faster and faster, past all the birds. Up, up, up he zoomed into the sky!

Tortoise reached the Sky Party first. He landed with a soft thump and folded his new wings. The tables were covered with shiny plates and yummy food. Tortoise’s eyes sparkled.“So much to eat…” he whispered.

He tasted one berry. Then a second. Then ten. Then… everything else. Sweet berries. Crunchy seeds. Golden honeycakes. Even the decorations! Tortoise munched until the tables were empty.

The birds reached the Sky Party. The tables were empty. “We helped him fly… he left us nothing,” they whispered. Tortoise gave a big burp. “Yummy,” he sighed. Owl’s eyes grew serious. “Friends, take back your feathers.” With a whoosh of wings, the birds pulled every feather from Tortoise’s wings.

The birds flew away into the sky. Tortoise stood alone on the soft cloud. The cloud wobbled under his feet. “Wait! I can’t fly without you!” he cried. But it was too late. He slipped and fell down, down, down…

“CRAAAAACK!” Tortoise’s shell hit the ground. He stayed very still. Then he slowly peeked out. His shiny shell now had tiny cracks all over it. Tortoise stared. “My beautiful shell…”

Owl and the birds flew down.“Are you hurt?” they asked. Tortoise sighed. “My shell… and my feelings.” “We can’t fix the cracks"said Owl, but you can fix how you behave.”

From that day on, Tortoise tried to share and be polite. His shell stayed cracked with little lines, and that is why tortoises still have cracked shell today.
