Chip, a tiny mouse, loved shiny things. She only ever looked for silver cheese crumbs. They sparkled like tiny stars! She gathered them all in a special box.

One sunny afternoon, a giant, clumsy cat, Flick, knocked Chip’s box right into the swirling Moon River. “My crumbs!” squeaked Chip. She dove in after them!

The river pulled at Chip. Then she saw it! A little beetle, legs kicking, going down, down, down! “Help!” cried the beetle.

Chip thought of her precious crumbs. She grabbed one, a shiny, silver speck. “Here!” she squeaked, pushing it to the beetle. The crumb floated! The beetle clung on and bobbed to the shore. Chip felt a tiny warmth in her chest.

Further down, a duck flapped its wings. “Oh, my wings are so wet! I can’t fly!” honked the duck, shivering. The river was getting stronger. Chip looked at her crumbs. They were so beautiful! But the duck looked so sad. She tossed two silver crumbs. “Quick!” she squeaked. The duck gobbled them up. “Mmm, energy!” squawked the duck and flapped its wings, strong again. Chip felt a bigger warmth, right in her tummy.

The river rushed faster! Around the bend, an otter sat on a rock, tummy rumbling. “No fish today! No supper!” he moaned. His eyes looked so empty. Chip had only a few crumbs left, her very last ones. They were so shiny! She loved them so much! But the otter’s tummy rumbled a loud, sad song. Chip pushed her last crumbs into the water. “For you!” she squeaked. The otter’s eyes lit up! He splashed after them, playing. “New toys!” he chattered. Chip felt a huge, happy warmth that filled her whole body.

Suddenly, the Moon River grew calm. It swirled gently. And then, slowly, something big rose from the water. A whole, giant wheel of silver cheese! It sparkled even brighter than Chip’s old crumbs. Chip gasped.

She dragged it to the shore. That night, Chip threw the best party ever. Everyone came: Flick the cat (who promised to be more careful), the little beetle, the happy duck, and the playful otter. They all munched on the magnificent silver cheese, and Chip felt like the richest mouse in the world. The cheese tasted even better when shared.
