Long, long ago, Elephant looked almost the same as today— except for one tiny thing. His trunk wasn’t long at all. It was short. Very short. More like a wiggly button on his face.

Little Elephant stomped across the savanna, sniffling loudly. “I can’t smell anything with this teeny-weeny trunk!” he complained. Monkey swung upside down. “Maybe don’t stick it everywhere, nosy-nose!” Elephant puffed up proudly. “I’m not nosy. I’m… curious.”

And curious he was. Elephant sniffed Zebra’s stripes—sniff-sniff-sniff! He sniffed Hippo’s ears—snorf-snorf! He even sniffed Monkey’s tail. “HEY!” yelped Monkey. “That’s not a flower!”

But Elephant wanted answers. “What do crocodiles eat?” he asked. Monkey gasped. “Don’t ask Crocodile! He bites anything that moves!” Elephant wiggled his tiny trunk proudly. “I will ask politely.”

Down at the river, Crocodile lounged in the water, hardly moving at all. Elephant tiptoed closer. “Crocodile?” he called sweetly. “What do you eat for lunch?” Crocodile smiled a slow, toothy smile. “Ohhh… I eat all sorts of things.”

Elephant leaned closer. “How about tiny fish? Slimy frogs? Mud pies?” Crocodile snickered. “Sometimes… I eat little animals who ask too many questions.”

Elephant froze. Then—CHOMP! Crocodile snapped at Elephant’s tiny trunk! Not a full bite—just enough to grab on tight. “EEEEEYOW!” Elephant squealed.

Elephant pulled. Crocodile pulled harder. The river splashed, the mud flew, Monkey screamed, and Elephant’s tiny trunk—streeeetched!

Elephant dug his feet into the mud. Crocodile tugged again—YANK! Elephant yanked back—YOINK! And his trunk grew longer… and longer… and looooooonger!

Finally—POP! Elephant flew backward, landing in a giant splash. His trunk swung like a rope, dripping and stretchy. Monkey stared, eyes wide. “WOAH. That’s… huge!” Elephant blinked. “Is it supposed to wobble like that?”

He tried sniffing. FWWWWOOOOMP! He sucked up half the river by accident. Then—SPLOSH! He sprayed Monkey right out of the tree.

But soon Elephant discovered a wonderful thing. He could reach figs high in trees. He could spray dusty friends to cool them down. He could trumpet—PRAAAAROOO! So loudly the whole savanna shook with laughter.

Monkey grinned. “Your long trunk suits you, nosy-nose.” Elephant smiled proudly. “It’s perfect for curious animals like me.”

And that is why Elephant has a long trunk today— for sniffing, sipping, spraying, trumpeting, and asking all the curious questions his little heart can hold.
