A charming folk tale about Anansi the Spider and Turtle, teaching lessons about manners and fairness through their playful dinner encounters. The story uses simple language and gentle humor, making it suitable for young children.
One day, Anansi the Spider caught some delicious yams. He cooked them and set them out to cool.
Just then, Turtle came by. “Hello, Anansi,” he said. “Those yams smell wonderful.”
Anansi smiled. “They are. You’re just in time for dinner.” Turtle sat down at the table.
But as Turtle reached out, Anansi stopped him. “In my house,” he said, “we wash our hands before we eat.”
Turtle went to the river and washed his hands. By the time he returned, the food was almost gone.
Still, Turtle reached out. But again, Anansi stopped him. “Wash again! Your hands are dirty.”
Turtle sighed, walked back to the river, and washed again. When he came back—Anansi had eaten all the yams.
Turtle said nothing. He simply thanked Anansi and went on his way.
Some days later, Turtle invited Anansi to his home for dinner. Anansi gladly accepted.
Turtle lived under the water. Anansi dove in, but he kept floating back to the top.
“Please join me,” said Turtle, sitting at a table below. Anansi tried again—but spiders are light.
He couldn’t stay down. He swam and splashed, but couldn’t reach the food.
Turtle looked up. “Anansi, in my home, we wear heavy shells.” He smiled politely.
Anansi swam to shore, picked up a heavy rock, and tied it to himself. He sank straight to the bottom.
Now Anansi reached for the food— but Turtle said, “In my home, we remove our shells before we eat.”
Anansi dropped the rock, floated up again, and watched Turtle eat alone.
When Turtle finished, he waved up to Anansi. “Thank you for coming, friend.”
Anansi said nothing. He had learned what it felt like to be tricked.
And that’s why Anansi is more careful with his manners—sometimes.
