Barnaby the Backward Booby
Barnaby, a blue-footed booby, always walks backward, even when his friends fly south for winter. His unusual journey north leads him through challenges like a tricky wind, a grumpy crab, and a huge wave, only to discover a secret, glowing cove filled with shimmering, rainbow-colored algae.
Barnaby the blue-footed booby always walked backward. Always! His friends, Biff and Buffy, zoomed forward. Barnaby just shuffled.
When the cold winds whistled, all the boobies flapped, flapped, flapped south. “Bye, Barnaby!” they squawked.
But Barnaby turned his back. He waddled north! His blue feet made little prints in the sand, cold, cold sand.
First, a tricky wind tried to push Barnaby back. WHOOSH! It pulled at his feathers. Barnaby gritted his beak. He leaned into the wind. He took one step back, then two, then three!
He saw something shiny. A tiny green sparkle in a rock. “Hmm,” he chirped, and kept waddling. The sparkle stayed in his mind.
Next, a grumpy crab scuttled out. “Go home, booby!” it snapped. It pinched Barnaby’s toe! Ouch!
Barnaby lifted his blue foot high. He stomped it down. The crab scurried away.
Barnaby peered around a big, bumpy rock. The air smelled sweet, like flowers. He saw more green sparkles. They pulsed, like tiny heartbeats.
Then, a huge, crashing wave tried to stop him. SPLASH! It soaked Barnaby to his beak. He shook his feathers.
He felt cold, but also tingly. He squinted. A cave! Inside, it glowed.
Not just green, but pink, purple, and gold! It was algae, dancing and shimmering. It lit up the whole cove.
No more cold. No more grumpy crabs. Just a warm, rainbow light. Barnaby had found the secret place.
He smiled, a big, happy booby smile. He turned around, just once, to see the amazing, glowing cove.
