I am standing in a lush, green jungle with thick leaves everywhere. The sunlight shines through the trees, creating long streaks of light and shadow on the ground. Somewhere in the tall grass, a tiger is hiding. But even though I look closely, it is very hard to see him!
Why is it so difficult to spot the tiger? I look at the dry grass and the branches. They are full of long, vertical lines. The black stripes on the tiger’s orange fur look exactly like the shadows of the grass. This is nature's first secret: Camouflage.
I notice that the stripes are not all the same. They have strange, uneven shapes. This helps "break up" the tiger’s body outline. Instead of seeing one big animal, other animals only see a mix of black and orange patterns that blend into the forest.
I look closely at the faces of two different tigers. Oh! I discovered a secret: Every tiger has a completely unique set of stripes. No two tigers in the world have the exact same pattern. It is just like our fingerprints, helping us identify each member of the tiger family.
I am curious—what happens if we shave off a tiger’s fur? I use a special lens to look through the coat. An amazing fact appears: The stripes are right there on the tiger’s skin! Even without hair, the tiger would still have black stripes on its body.
Why is the tiger bright orange instead of green like the trees? I look through the eyes of a deer (the tiger’s prey). Most mammals don't see orange the way we do; they see orange as green or brownish-gray. So to the deer, the tiger looks perfectly hidden in the greenery!
Thanks to his striped coat, the tiger can move very quietly toward his prey. Step by step, his stripes sway with the movement of the grass. The deer keeps eating, having no idea that a "ghost" is getting closer and closer.
I look at the back of the tiger’s ears. There are two large white spots that look like giant eyes watching from behind. This is a cool secret! These spots help tiger cubs follow their mother through the dark woods, and they also trick predators into thinking the tiger is watching them from the back.
Tigers are cats that love the water! I see one jump into a river for a swim. In the water, the stripes look like the reflections of sunlight on the waves. The tiger is a master hunter on land and in the water.
This striped suit doesn't just help the tiger hunt; it also keeps him safe. When a tiger sleeps in the shade, he completely disappears from sight. Nature gave the tiger the most perfect uniform for survival.
I see tiny tiger cubs that were just born. They already have little stripes all over them! They will wear this special coat their whole lives, from the time they are tiny fluff-balls until they become the mighty kings of the jungle.
I watch the tiger walk proudly under the sunset. His stripes shimmer like black silk ribbons. The mix of beauty and power makes the tiger one of the most magnificent creatures in the natural world.
