The Whispering Cranes Sam spotted Lily at the back of the library, staring at her science notes. Her eyes looked tired, like two tiny cranes made from soft, layered paper—ready to fold in on themselves.

“Lily, want company?” Sam asked. She shook her head slowly. “I try to remember the facts… but they fly away.”

Sam opened his backpack and pulled out a bundle of origami paper, warm like autumn leaves—russet, honey, and gentle rose.

“My grandma taught me something,” he said. “If we fold paper cranes while studying, each crane ‘holds’ one fact.”

Lily’s expression flickered with hope. “Really? Like… memory birds?” Sam nodded. “Exactly!”

They read the first science fact together. Lily repeated it, then folded the first crease. The paper rustled softly, like a tiny whisper saying You can do this.

With each new fact, Lily folded another crane. The flock on the table grew—delicate wings, soft textures, mulberry-colored shadows.

Soon she smiled, brighter than the warm paper tones around them. “Sam, I remembered all of them! The cranes helped me stay calm.”

Sam grinned. “See? Learning flies better with a friend.”

As the library lights dimmed, Lily gathered the cranes gently.

“Thank you, Sam. These little birds feel like courage I can hold.”

Together they walked out, the origami cranes rustling softly—like a quiet promise that learning would never feel lonely again.
