A Note to Young Readers This is a retelling of the story of Zāl and the Simurgh from the Shahnameh (The Book of Kings) By Ferdowsi. We’ve made it simple and full of light, magic, and adventure, just for kids like you! You’ll meet Zāl, the white-haired boy, and the amazing Simurgh a shining, magical bird and follow their exciting journey together.

Sam Nariman, the great hero of Iran, had no child and his heart was always sad. One day, his wife gave birth to a beautiful baby boy.

The baby had rosy cheeks and a lovely face — but his hair was white and shining like bright snow. His mother was worried. She didn’t know how to tell Sam. The old nanny went to Sam and said, “O Sam! God has given you a healthy, beautiful son… and his hair glows like sunlight on white clouds.”

When Sam saw the child, his heart shook. He looked at the sky and cried, “Oh God… why did You give me a child with hair like an old man? How can I hold my head high among brave warriors?” Angry and confused, he walked away.

Sam ordered that the baby be taken far away and left on the bright, windy slopes of Mount Alborz.

The tiny baby lay alone, crying softly. His little voice rose into the sky and lit a warm spark inside the heart of the Simurgh — a giant, magical bird made of fire, feathers, and light. She flew down, her wings glowing like a golden sunrise. At first she wanted to take him as prey… but when she saw his shining hair and gentle cry, her heart blazed with love. She lifted him gently and raised him as one of her own chicks.

Years passed. The boy, now named Zāl, means “the white-haired one,” grew tall and strong. His white hair glowed like a bright flame when he ran across the mountains. Travelers sometimes saw him and said, “Look! A shining boy on the rocks!” And soon, stories about him spread everywhere.

One night, Sam had a dream. A glowing rider came to him and said, “Your son is alive.” The wise priests told him, “Why did you leave your child because of his hair? You must go and bring him back.”

Sam hurried to Mount Alborz. When he reached it, he saw the huge mountain shining under the sun and, at its high peak, the Simurgh’s nest glowing like a palace of light. He saw Zāl standing near the nest — but the mountain was too steep to climb.

The Simurgh watched everything. She went to Zāl and said softly, “My child… it is time. You must go to your father.” Tears filled Zāl’s eyes. “Are you tired of me? You raised me under your warm, shining wings!” The Simurgh touched his hair with her bright feathers and said, “Never. I will always love you. But now you must learn bravery and heroism in the world below.”

The Simurgh pulled a glowing feather from her wing. “Take this,” she said. “If darkness ever surrounds you… or trouble closes in… set this feather into the fire. Its light will reach me, and I will come to help you.”
