Mai and the Land of Giants
Join Mai on a fascinating time-travel adventure to the Mesozoic Era, where she encounters majestic dinosaurs like the towering Brachiosaurus, the horned Triceratops, and the mighty T-Rex. This story is an engaging introduction to different types of dinosaurs, their characteristics, and how paleontologists learn about them, explaining their eventual disappearance and modern-day relatives.
Hello! This is Mai. Today, Mai is stepping into a time machine. She is traveling back millions of years to the Mesozoic Era.
The air is warm, the ferns are as tall as houses, and the ground shakes with the footsteps of the most amazing creatures to ever walk the Earth: the Dinosaurs.
Mai learns that the word "Dinosaur" means "Terrible Lizard." Even though they look like giant reptiles, scientists found that dinosaurs are actually related to the birds we see today! They lived on Earth for about 165 million years, which is much longer than humans have been around.
The first dinosaur Mai meets is the Brachiosaurus. This is a "Sauropod," a group of dinosaurs with very long necks and tails. The Brachiosaurus was as tall as a four-story building! It used its long neck to reach the softest leaves at the very top of the trees.
Next, Mai sees a Triceratops. It has three sharp horns on its face and a giant bony frill around its neck. Even though it looks scary, the Triceratops was a Herbivore, which means it only ate plants. It used its horns to protect itself from hungry predators.
Suddenly, the ground trembles. It’s the Tyrannosaurus Rex, the "King of the Tyrant Lizards." The T-Rex had teeth as big as bananas and a bite more powerful than any other land animal. Even though its arms were tiny, it was a fast and terrifying hunter.
Mai looks at the Stegosaurus. It has two rows of diamond-shaped bony plates sticking out of its back. Scientists think these plates helped the dinosaur control its body temperature or show off to friends. It also had four sharp spikes on its tail for defense!
In the sky, Mai sees creatures soaring. These are Pterosaurs. While they lived at the same time as dinosaurs, they were actually flying reptiles. Some were as small as birds, while others were as big as a small airplane!
Mai learns about Velociraptors. In movies, they are big, but in real life, they were about the size of a large turkey! However, they were very smart, very fast, and covered in Feathers. They had a big, curved claw on each foot to help them catch their prey.
How do we know so much about them? Mai meets a Paleontologist. These are scientists who dig up Fossils—bones that have turned into stone over millions of years. By putting these "stone puzzles" together, we can see what the dinosaurs looked like.
Mai learns that not all dinosaurs were giants. Some, like the Compsognathus, were only the size of a chicken! Dinosaurs came in all shapes and sizes, living in forests, deserts, and even near the snowy poles.
About 66 million years ago, the dinosaurs disappeared. Most scientists think a giant Asteroid from space hit the Earth. This caused the weather to change very quickly, and the dinosaurs could not find enough food to survive.
Mai’s prehistoric journey is over. She realizes that although the giant dinosaurs are gone, their relatives—the Birds—are still singing in her garden today.
If you could have a dinosaur as a pet, would you want a tiny feathered one or a giant long-necked one?
