Join Leo, a curious stargazer, on his mission to uncover the secrets of the Moon. This educational story explains why the Moon changes its shape, how it shines, and introduces fascinating facts about craters, gravity, and even astronauts.
Hello! This is Leo. Every night before bed, Leo looks out his window at the Moon. It looks so bright and beautiful, but he has a question: "Why does it change its shape?"
The Moon is a giant ball of rock that travels around the Earth. It is our closest neighbor in space! It takes about 27 days for the Moon to go all the way around our planet one time.
Did you know the Moon has no light of its own? It is like a giant Mirror. It looks bright because it reflects the light from the Sun. When the Sun shines on the Moon, we see the glowing parts.
The different shapes we see are called Phases. As the Moon moves around the Earth, we see different amounts of its sunny side. Sometimes we see the whole side, and sometimes we see only a little sliver.
When the Earth is between the Sun and the Moon, we see a Full Moon. It looks like a big, bright silver coin in the sky. It is so bright that you can almost see your shadow on the ground!
When we only see a small curved edge of the Moon, it is called a Crescent. It looks like a banana or a fingernail. This happens when the Moon is moving between the Earth and the Sun.
Sometimes, we cannot see the Moon at all! This is the New Moon. The sunny side is facing away from us, so the Moon looks dark. It is still there, but it is hiding in the shadows.
If you look closely, the Moon has many spots. These are Craters. Craters are big holes made by space rocks hitting the Moon a long time ago. The Moon also has giant Mountains and flat plains called "seas."
In 1969, the first humans landed on the Moon! Because there is no wind or rain, the Footprints left by the astronauts are still there today, over 50 years later!
The Moon is smaller than the Earth, so it has less Gravity. If you stood on the Moon, you could jump six times higher than you can on Earth! You would feel very light, like you were floating.
The Moon is very powerful. Its gravity pulls on the Earth’s oceans. This is what creates the Tides. The Moon makes the water at the beach go up and down every day.
Leo has learned so much about his silver friend in the sky. Now he knows that even when the Moon changes, it is always there watching over us. Can you find the Moon tonight?
