Dot's Bright Light

Little Dot was a tiny sprite who lived in Glimmer Valley, a place always bathed in a soft twilight, where even the stars twinkled with a gentle glow.

Grandma Sprite said that somewhere in the world, there was a "real light," wonderfully warm and bright.

"What is the real light? How wonderful it would be to find it and bring it back to our valley!" This thought became the brightest seed in Little Dot's heart.

Just then, a warm, magical beam of light danced right onto the tip of Little Dot's nose. "Is this the 'real light' Grandma talked about? It's so warm, like a hug from Mommy!"

He reached out his little hands, trying to touch and hold the light, but it playfully slipped right through his fingers. "Light, don't go!" Little Dot chased after it.

He chased the light further and further. The sky grew dark, and before he knew it, he was at the edge of a forest. Little Dot felt cold and scared.

Then, from afar, came the "Boom-boom!" of drums and the sound of happy laughter. The sky turned fiery red! What could be so bright?

"Boom—Crack!" Molten iron flew into the sky, turning into a shower of the shiniest star-rain! Little Dot stared in amazement.

He whispered, "Mr. Grandpa, aren't you afraid of getting burned?"

The old grandpa laughed heartily: "My child, it takes courage to face something a little scary! See how this light chases away all the darkness and fear!"

A small, golden spark drifted down and landed gently in Little Dot's cautiously outstretched palm. It was warm, but didn't burn. "So this is the light of courage."

With a heart now filled with courage, Little Dot was no longer afraid of the dark night. He walked and walked, until suddenly he saw a shimmering, moving river of light down the mountain!

It was a lantern festival! Little Dot ran up to a giant "koi fish" lantern and asked curiously, "Mr. Koi Lantern, why are you swimming? Where are you going?"

The koi lantern smiled and said: "We are swimming along the river of light, towards the new year!

This light tells us that tomorrow will be better—this is Hope!"

Next, Little Dot was drawn by the sound of drums and gongs. On a white cloth screen, a tiger and a fairy were fighting! "How can shadows tell stories?" He watched, utterly fascinated.

He ran behind the screen and found an old grandmother with little paper puppets in her hands. She asked him to hold out his hand, and the shadow of a puppet danced right onto his palm: "Light is Wisdom. It can turn a single thought into a thousand—stories."

Suddenly, rain began to pour down! The crowd scattered to find shelter from the rain. Little Dot also ran to hide under a tree, the rain soaking his little body.

Now, Little Dot knew about the light of courage, hope, and wisdom... but where was his own light? He felt more alone than ever before.

Just then, he saw a little girl not far away, using her own coat to shield a small lantern, more fragile than a dewdrop, from the rain that threatened to put it out.

"No! The light will go out!" Without a second thought, Little Dot ran over, took a deep breath, and with all his might—"Whoosh!"—blew the rain clouds away.

The rain stopped! The sky lantern floated up, swaying into the sky. The little girl cheered, "Look, a new star!" Little Dot suddenly felt a warmth in his chest. He looked down and—oh!—he was glowing from within!

He realized: When I am willing to help others, my own light begins to shine.

Little Dot returned to Glimmer Valley. He had become the warmest, brightest source of light in the whole valley. All the sprites gathered around, amazed. Grandma Sprite said warmly, "The light you found is the most wonderful light in the world."

When you wish to chase a distant light, you may find in the end— The brightest light shines from within.

Every child who chases the light can become a light that brightens the world.
