Long ago, in ancient Greece, the world was new and bright. The gods on Mount Olympus had given people many gifts—fire, music, and learning. But they worried that humans might forget to be wise and humble.

So Zeus, the king of the gods, planned a lesson. He asked the craftsman god Hephaestus to shape a woman out of clay. Her name would be Pandora, which means “the one with all gifts.”

Each god gave Pandora something special. Athena gave her wisdom, Aphrodite gave her beauty, Hermes gave her curiosity, and the Graces gave her charm. When she opened her eyes, she was alive—and very curious about everything she saw.

As a wedding gift, Zeus gave Pandora a beautiful golden box. It shone like the sun and was tied with silver strings. But he spoke firmly: “Pandora, this box must never be opened.” Pandora promised to keep it safe.

Pandora married a kind man named Epimetheus, who loved her dearly. They lived happily in a small stone house. Every day, Pandora dusted the golden box and wondered what treasures might be inside.

At first, she could ignore her thoughts. But curiosity whispered softly, “Just one little look…” Pandora’s heart beat faster. “What harm could one peek do?” she said to herself. The sunlight glowed on the box as if it wanted to be touched.

She untied the silver strings and lifted the lid just a crack— and suddenly dark smoke rushed out! It filled the room with buzzing and cries. Pandora gasped in fear.

Out of the box flew all the troubles of the world— sickness, sadness, anger, jealousy—spreading fast into the wind. Pandora tried to close the lid, but it was too late. The evils had escaped to every corner of the earth.

She fell to her knees and wept. “What have I done?” Epimetheus ran to her side. “It’s all right, Pandora,” he said gently. “We will face what has come together.”

Then, from the bottom of the box, a soft golden light shimmered. A small voice whispered, “Do not be afraid.” It was Hope—the last gift of the gods, still waiting inside.

Pandora opened the box once more, and Hope floated into the air like a tiny bright bird. It spread its light across the world, softening every shadow that the evils had cast.

Since that day, people have known sadness and worry, but also courage and comfort. Because when troubles come, Hope always follows—shining quietly, like a golden light that never fades.
