Silas gripped the oars. His new cedar canoe bobbed. He wanted to race! He dug his blades into the river.

He pulled. Harder! The canoe clung to the water. It was like a giant rock. Silas grunted. His face turned red.

The river laughed, gurgling past. The canoe stayed still. Silas stomped his foot. No race today.

Next, Silas tried a new spot. A narrow part of the stream. He planned to fight his way up.

He dug his oars deep. He pushed. And pushed! The canoe felt heavy now. Like a big, wet log.

It would not go. Silas splashed the water. He yelled. The river just chuckled. The canoe stayed stuck. Silas felt hot tears.

Then, he saw a big waterfall ahead. He had to go up! Silas pulled with all his might. His muscles burned.

The canoe was like glue. It would not move. He screamed. His throat was sore. The river roared, pulling him back. Silas dropped his oars.

He sighed. He closed his eyes. The canoe moved. Swaying gently. It danced through the rocks.

It spun around the bend. Light as a feather. Silas just sat. The canoe showed him the way. It moved him along. He learned to let go.
