Hello! This is Mai. Today, she is going to a very big building with sliding glass doors. It is the Supermarket! Mai is holding her mom’s hand. She sees rows and rows of food, toys, and bright lights. "Let’s start our shopping!" says Mom.
First, Mai gets a Small Basket. She learns about Carrying. Mom has a big cart, but Mai wants to help too. Her yellow basket is just the right size for her small hands. "I am a little shopper today!" thinks Mai.
Next, they go to the Vegetable Area. She learns about Freshness. Mai sees green broccoli, orange carrots, and purple eggplants. She helps Mom pick the best tomatoes. They are red, round, and feel very firm.
Now, Mai looks at the Shopping List. She learns about Planning. Mom has a list on her phone. "We need milk and eggs, Mai," says Mom. Mai looks at the signs above the aisles to find the right place.
Suddenly, Mai sees a Mountain of Oranges. She learns about Balance. She carefully picks up three oranges and puts them in her basket. She is very slow so the oranges don't roll away and fall on the floor.
Next, they reach the Dairy Aisle. She learns about Coldness. When Mai touches the milk bottle, it feels like ice! She learns that some food needs to stay in the big "Fridge Room" to stay fresh and yummy.
Now, Mai sees a Box of Chocolate Cookies. She learns about Wants vs. Needs. "Can we buy this, Mom?" asks Mai. Mom says, "We have fruit for a snack, but we can pick one treat today." Mai chooses a small pack of yogurt instead.
Suddenly, Mai loses sight of her Mom. She learns about Safety. For one second, she can't see the big cart. Mai stays very still and calls out, "Mom!" Mom is just around the corner. "Always stay close to me, Mai," says Mom.
Next, they go to the Checkout Counter. She learns about Waiting. There is a line of people. Mai waits patiently behind a man with a big loaf of bread. She puts her oranges and yogurt on the moving belt. Zip-zip!
Now, it is time to Pay. She learns about Money. Mom gives some paper bills to the cashier. The machine goes Beep! and a long receipt comes out. "Shopping is like a big game of counting," thinks Mai.
The shopping is Finished. She learns about Lifting. Mai helps Mom carry a small bag to the car. It is a bit heavy, but Mai is strong. She feels proud because she helped her mom with all the chores.
Then, Mai goes back Home. She learns about Unpacking. She helps Mom put the milk in the fridge and the oranges in the bowl. "Everything is in its place now!" says Mai with a happy smile.
Finally, Mai eats one of the Oranges. She learns about Reward. It tastes sweet and juicy. She realized that going to the supermarket is a big adventure where she can learn and help her family.
Mai’s supermarket adventure is finished. She tells her dad, "I was a great shopper today!" She realized that Choosing healthy food is fun and important. If you went to the supermarket with Mai, would you buy a red tomato or a sweet orange?
