Once upon a time, a mother duck sat on her eggs. She waited for them to hatch.

Soon the eggs began to crack. One by one, the ducklings came out.

One big egg was last. It cracked open.

A large gray duckling came out. He looked different from the others.

“You are big and gray,” said the ducks. “You do not look like us.”

The ducklings walked to the pond. They swam in the water.

“You do not look like us,” said the ducks. “Go away!” they said.

The little duckling was very sad. He walked away from the pond.

He walked and walked. He looked for a new home.

Winter came. The duckling was cold and hungry. He went to a farm.

At last spring came. The sun was warm again. He went to the pond.

The duckling saw some beautiful birds. They were white swans.

“I want to look like them,” said the duckling. “But I do not look like them.” He was sad.

The duckling looked in the water. He saw a beautiful white bird. It was him!

“You look like us,” said the swans. He was not a duck. He was a swan!
