Maya, Sam, and their Pretend Pet.

Maya and her brother Sam loved animals. They always ran to the dog park to watch puppies jump and play. "When we get a dog, I’ll teach it to fetch!" Sam said, excited. Maya smiled. "And I’ll take it for walks every day!"

One sunny Saturday, Maya and Sam were playing outside when Mom called them in. "We have a surprise for you!" she said, smiling. Their eyes grew wide. Could it be a pet? Was it finally time for a dog?

Maya and Sam rushed to the kitchen, ready for their surprise. Dad smiled and said, “Grandma and grandpa said your aunt Jenny just had a baby, and they want us to come visit!”

Maya and Sam stopped in surprise. “Is that it?” Maya asked, confused. Sam’s smile faded. "I thought we were finally getting a dog!" Dad explained, “I know you want a dog, but pets need a lot of care. Right now, with school and work, I don't think we're ready to take care of a dog.”

Maya said, “But we can take care of it! We’ll feed it, walk it, and play with it every day!” Sam added, “I’ll clean up after it!” But Mom explained, “A pet needs more than that. It needs a lot of love, training, play time, and trips to the vet. I'm sorry but it’s not the right time yet.”

Maya and Sam sat quietly, thinking about what their parents said. they understood, but they still felt sad. “I really wanted a dog,” Sam whispered. Maya looked at him sadly and said, “I know, Sam. I did too.”

Then, Maya had an idea! “What if we practice by taking care of a toy pet? We can learn what it’s like to have one!” Sam’s face lit up. “A pretend dog? We can teach it tricks!”

Mom and Dad smiled. “That’s a great idea!” Mom said. The next day, Maya and Sam set up a space in the yard for their pretend pet, with a small doghouse, a soft blanket, bowls, plenty of dog toys, and even a leash.

Each day after school, they took turns caring for their toy dog. They fed it, walked it, gave it bubble baths, and even taught it tricks like sitting and rolling over. “Good dog!” Sam cheered, giving it a pretend bubble treat.

After a few weeks, Maya and Sam learned a lot. They took care of their pretend pet with love and patience. They realized it wasn’t always easy, but it was fun and they were getting better at it.

One evening, Maya and Sam sat together to draw a picture of a dog, Sam said, “I think we’re ready for a real dog now! We’ve practiced so much!” Maya smiled. “Me too! When we get a dog, it’ll be the best thing! We'll have lots of fun!”

Mom and Dad smiled, listening. “You’re doing a great job practicing,” Dad said. “I believe if we keep working together, we'll be getting a dog sooner than we planned.”

So, while Maya and Sam didn’t have a pet yet, they knew they were getting closer every day. They had learned that sometimes it’s okay to wait, and that practicing together made them ready for anything.
