The dog looked up at him. Her eyes were full of love.
Without thinking, he painted her in the corner—small, sitting, peaceful.
When the king saw it, he grew angry. “A dog? In a holy painting?”
The artist begged. “She is kind. She never asked for anything. Isn’t that sacred too?”
The king turned away. “Take down the painting.”
That night, the artist cried. The dog curled beside him, warm and still.
But in the morning, something had changed. A golden light shone from the painting. The dog’s image glowed. Her eyes looked alive.
Then the dog herself was gone. Her body lay quiet. Her soul had risen.
The monks came and bowed. “This was no ordinary dog,” they said. “She has gone to heaven.”
And from that day on, the painting stayed in the temple—with the little dog beside the Buddha.
