If There’s a Rainbow on the Horizon

Even when she was a young girl, she already had a small reputation locally.

She was so sad—her eyes were ruined from crying.

It could also change into all kinds of bright colors.

At the door stood a small, light gray figure. "My name is Bad Weather."

"Bad Weather? What's that?" Aunt Ma asked in confusion. "Bad Weather means strong winds and heavy rain, scorching heat and hail," said Bad Weather. "You all like good weather, so of course you don't remember me."

"But I’ve lost all my tools—I can’t knit a thing!" "Nonsense! The yarn’s right on the table, and the knitting needles are fine in the wardrobe too." Aunt Ma stood up to look, and just as Bad Weather said, they were there. "Oh fine—then what do you want?"

"Bright orange like an orange, sunny yellow like sunlight, fresh green like grass, pale cyan like the sky, deep blue like the sea... And above all—purple like ziyunmu flowers!"

Ziyunmu—it was where she’d met and loved her husband. Those little purple flowers, like a dream, pulled Aunt Ma back into memories...

Aunt Ma counted Bad Weather’s requests, wondering, "What is this thing?" "A gift—it’s a gift!" Bad Weather exclaimed in a hurry.

True enough—you can’t spell out the details of a gift. Aunt Ma paced back and forth in the house. She went from the kitchen to the living room, then on to the bedroom. "Figuring out a gift really makes you wrack your brain!" "Ah, I know! I’ll knit that!"

Aunt Ma got all set, made herself a pot of hot black tea, slipped on her reading glasses, cast on, and began knitting.

From night till dawn, Aunt Ma knit —she didn’t feel tired at all. Her eyes got clearer, as if she’d suddenly grown young.

"Come get your gift!" Aunt Ma called out. Bad Weather took it, thanked her, and wrapped the long, colorful scarf around himself —it felt like the softest hug in the world. "One last question," Aunt Ma said thoughtfully. "What agreement are you talking about, anyway?"

"The other day I was playing in the eastern forest, and I met someone. He said, ‘Just give this yarn to the best knitter in the village —she’ll definitely knit you a gift.’" Bad Weather said innocently.

Bad Weather fluffed his colorful scarf and hopped out. "You really are the best knitter!" Aunt Ma wiped her tears, leaned on her cane, and stepped out. The clouds cleared, a rainbow hung overhead, and she smiled knowingly.
