In a green valley, three Billy Goats Gruff saw fresh grass shining on the far hill. They were hungry and eager to cross the bridge that hummed softly over the river.
Under that bridge lived a troll—ugly, hungry, and mean. He loved nothing more than to snatch anyone who dared cross above his head.
The smallest goat jingled his bell. “I’ll go first,” he said bravely. Clip-clop, clip-clop! went his hooves on the planks.
A voice boomed from below: “Who’s that trip-trapping on my bridge?” “It’s only me, Little Billy Goat Gruff,” said the little goat. “I’m going to the meadow to eat the green grass.”
“I’m coming to eat you up!” roared the troll. "Oh, don't eat me! I'm just skin and bone," bleated the goat. "Wait for my brother. He's much bigger and tastier!" The troll growled but agreed. “All right, be off with you.”
The middle goat came next—hooves heavier, horns longer. Clip-clop, clip-clop! echoed through the valley.
The troll growled again. “Who’s that trip-trapping on my bridge?” “Middle Billy Goat Gruff,” said the goat. “I’m going to the meadow to eat the green grass.”
“I’m coming to eat you up!” snarled the troll. "Oh, don't eat me! I'm just skin and bone," bleated the goat. "Wait for my brother. He's much bigger and tastier!" The troll licked his lips. “Very well. Hurry him along.”
Then came Big Billy Goat Gruff—his hooves thudded like thunder. The troll couldn’t wait any longer.
He leapt onto the bridge. “Who’s that trip-trapping on my bridge?” “It’s me,” bellowed the big goat, “Big Billy Goat Gruff! And who are you to stop me?”
“I’m the troll who guards this bridge,” he sneered, “and I’m going to eat you up!” The big goat lowered his head. “Come and try!”
He charged! Crash! went his horns. Splash! went the troll—straight into the rushing river below.
The troll tumbled downstream, sputtering promises to never come back. The bridge was safe at last.
The three goats trotted across the bridge together, bells ringing, tails high. On the far side, sweet grass waited just for them.
They munched until sunset, full and happy. And from that day on, no one feared crossing that bridge again.
