Hello! This is Leo. Today, the sun has just come out after a quick summer rain shower. Leo looks up and sees a beautiful, colorful arc stretching across the sky.

He is curious: "Where do those colors come from, and can I ever touch them?" Today, he is exploring the Magic of Rainbows.

First, Leo learns that a rainbow is an Optical Illusion. It isn't a solid object like a bridge or a toy. It is made of light and water. To see a rainbow, you must have the sun behind you and the rain in front of you at the same time!

The secret ingredient is White Light. Even though sunlight looks clear or white, it is actually made of all the colors of the rainbow mixed together. Leo learns that light is like a team of colors traveling very fast in a straight line.

When sunlight hits a Raindrop, something amazing happens. The drop acts like a tiny glass prism. As the light enters the water, it slows down and bends. This bending of light is called Refraction, and it starts to separate the colors.

After the light enters the drop, it hits the back of the raindrop and bounces off, just like a ball bouncing off a wall. This is called Reflection. The light then travels back out of the front of the drop, bending one more time.

As the light leaves the raindrop, the white light has completely split into its hidden colors. Because each color bends at a slightly different angle, they spread out so we can see them individually. This is called Dispersion.

Leo learns the secret code for the colors: ROY G. BIV. This stands for Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and Violet. Red is always on the outside of the arc because it bends the least, and Violet is on the inside because it bends the most.

Why is a rainbow a Curve? Leo finds out that a rainbow is actually a full Circle of light! We only see an arc because the ground blocks the bottom half. If Leo were in an airplane high in the sky, he might see a perfect, glowing circle of color!

Sometimes, if the light is very strong, Leo might see a Double Rainbow! The second rainbow is higher and fainter, and the colors are actually in reverse order. This happens because the light bounced twice inside the raindrops instead of once.

Can Leo find the End of the Rainbow? He tries to run toward it, but the rainbow seems to move away! Because a rainbow depends on where Leo is standing, it will always be the same distance from him. Every person actually sees their own personal rainbow.

Leo learns that rainbows can happen without rain, too! He sees a "Moonbow" caused by moonlight at night, or a "Mistbow" created by the tiny spray of a waterfall. Anywhere there is light and water droplets, a rainbow can be born.

Rainbows have many Stories. Some people say there is a pot of gold at the end, while others believe they are bridges between worlds. To scientists, they are a beautiful reminder of how light and water work together to create art in the sky.

Leo’s colorful adventure is finished. The sun is getting lower, and the rainbow slowly fades away as the water drops dry up. He realizes that science can make the world even more magical. If you could add a new color to the rainbow, what would it be?
