Light from Kanyoni wa ngethe

Long ago in the land of the Kikuyu people from a place called Kabete , there was a spirit bird called ' Kanyoni wa ngethe ' . 'Kanyoni ' meaning bird in the kikuyu language . This was no odinary bird as it spoke like a person and had a just spirit as he watched over the forests of Kabete .

The bird watched over the woodland forest and sacred acacias . Whenever it sensed danger it called out a cry saying " Ukabi watigire mitwe yaari minoru ! ' . This meant 'Ukabi beware of the heads that are many '. The people knew this warning it was a sign that the forest and its spirits were displeased .

The villagers continued cutting down trees for they needed timber to buid houses and firewood to cook their food . They ignored the cries of the bird every time. The bird knew that too much of something is bad and that eventually the villagers actions would catch up to them .

The villagers never stopped cutting down trees until the land adjacent to their homes was desolate . They enjoyed building their homes and rejoiced when they got firewood to cook . But all this would end since they didn't plant any trees after chopping them .

One day after the villagers have finished harvesting their fill of wood . They went home but didn't know what was in store for them . It rained heavily and little by little the land that was once occupied trees was flooding .

It didn't take long until all their livestocks and crops together with their wooden houses were washed away in the flood . The villagers went through a huge loss as everything they had accomplished was carried by the water .

The next day the villagers held a meeting where they discussed on how they should have listened to Kanyoni wa ngethe . They knew that the bird was actually warning them against displeasing the ancestral spirits . They knew they had to correct their actions . The had to stop being arrogant and to heed the warnings .

Not long after the bird returned and saw that the villagers had now learnt that their actions had consequences . They began planting trees and offering sacrifices to the ancestors seeking forgiveness for their arrogance and seeking restoration .
