Cowpox gave people small, harmless blisters. It didn’t make them very sick — only a little tired. But somehow, it protected them from smallpox!
Edward thought, “Maybe cowpox can protect everyone!” He wrote his idea in his notebook.
In 1796, Edward met a brave boy named James Phipps. He wanted to test his idea safely.
Edward gave James a tiny bit of cowpox. The boy got a little fever — then felt fine again!
Later, Edward tested James with smallpox — just a little. James stayed healthy and strong! Edward’s idea worked!
