The Sun is a big, bright star in the sky. It shines all by itself! When sunlight starts its journey, it’s super fast and super bright. It’s going to travel—to light up the whole Earth!

Little Light zooms through space. There’s no air and nothing to block its way, so it can go really, really fast! How fast? In one second, light could go around the Earth seven and a half times!

The Sun is very bright, but we can only see light when it hits something. Space is mostly empty—only a few planets and the Moon are there. That’s why space looks dark!

After about eight minutes, light finally reaches Earth. It touches the air first. The air spreads the light out a little, and the sky turns blue! That’s the blue sky we see!

Some light keeps flying down. It shines on trees, the ground, and the sea. Some light bounces back into the sky, and some is soaked up by the ground and becomes heat. That’s why sunlight feels warm on your skin!

When light passes through clouds, it becomes soft. That’s why cloudy light doesn’t hurt your eyes. Sometimes clouds block the light, and then the sky turns gray and the ground looks darker.

When light meets raindrops, the raindrops split it into seven colors— red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. That’s when a rainbow appears in the sky!

The Sun slowly goes down. Light has to pass through thicker air now. The blue light scatters away, and only the red and orange light reach our eyes. That’s why the evening sky turns red and golden.

At night, sunlight still travels through space, but this side of Earth doesn’t face the Sun. The Earth doesn’t shine by itself, so we see darkness. Only the Moon, the stars, and our lights glow in the night.

As the Earth spins, sunlight comes back to us again. Some light shines on leaves to help plants grow. Some light bounces off clouds and lakes, making them sparkle.

So next time you see sunlight, you’ll know it came all the way from the Sun, flying through dark space for eight minutes— just to reach your little hand!
