Mai's "How It's Made" Journey
Mai, a curious girl, embarks on a journey to discover how everyday objects like paper, pencils, glass, and chocolate are made. This story explains the origins and manufacturing processes of various items, fostering appreciation for the effort behind them.
Hello! This is Mai. She is very curious. Every time she uses an object, she asks herself: "Where did this come from?" Today, she is going to find out!
Mai looks at her notebook. It is made of Paper. Paper starts as a Tree! In a big factory, wood is chopped into tiny pieces, mixed with water to make pulp, and then pressed flat and dried.
Inside her pencil is Graphite (the black part) and Wood. The factory carves a groove in a piece of wood, lays the graphite inside, and glues another piece of wood on top like a sandwich!
Mai drinks from a Glass. Did you know glass is made from Sand? Sand is heated in a very hot furnace until it melts into a liquid. Then, it is blown or molded into the shape of a cup or a window.
Mai touches her soft shirt. It is made of Cotton. Cotton grows on a plant! The fluffy white puffs are spun into Thread, and then a big machine weaves the thread into fabric to be sewn into clothes.
Mai eats a slice of Bread. Bread starts as Wheat in a field. The farmer harvests the wheat, it is ground into Flour, and then a baker mixes it with water and yeast to bake it in an oven.
Mai looks at her water bottle. It is made of Plastic. Plastic is made from oil found deep underground. It is turned into tiny pellets, melted, and blown like a balloon into a bottle shape.
Mai sees a house being built. It takes many materials! Bricks are made of clay, Steel beams come from iron, and Concrete is a mix of stone and water.
Yum! Mai loves Chocolate. Chocolate comes from Cacao Beans found in pods on trees. The beans are fermented, dried, roasted, and ground into a smooth paste with sugar and milk.
In big factories, many people and Robots work together on an Assembly Line. Each person or robot does one small part of the job until the whole product, like a car, is finished!
Mai realizes that everything she uses was made by someone or something. She feels Grateful for the hard work that goes into making her world comfortable.
Mai is inspired! She decides to make something herself using her own hands. What would you like to build or make today?
