I am looking at a smooth, clear window. To my lens, the glass feels very slippery. Even a tiny drop of water slides right off. But wait! I see a small, green lizard walking straight up the glass. He is a Gecko. He doesn't have a rope or a ladder.

I watch the gecko reach the top of the window. He doesn't stop. He walks onto the ceiling and hangs upside down! He looks at me with his big, golden eyes. He is not falling. How does he stick to something so smooth?

I look closely at his feet. Is he using glue? I don't see any sticky liquid. Is he using suction cups like a toy? No, I don't see any of those either. His feet are dry and clean. The secret is much smaller than I thought.

I use my super-zoom lens to look at the bottom of the gecko’s toe. I see thousands of tiny ridges. On these ridges, there are millions of microscopic hairs called setae. These hairs are so small you need a powerful microscope to see them.

But wait, there is more! I zoom in even closer on one single hair. The end of each hair splits into hundreds of even tinier tips called spatulae. They look like tiny, soft spatulas or broccoli florets.

When the gecko puts his foot down, these millions of tiny tips get very close to the glass. They get so close that they start to "hug" the atoms of the glass. This is a special science power called Van der Waals forces.

One tiny hair is weak. But millions of hairs working together are incredibly strong! If a gecko used all his hairs at once, he could hold up two adult humans! He is a tiny weightlifting champion of the world.

If his feet are so sticky, how does he move? I watch him take a step. He doesn't pull his foot straight up. He peels his toes back, like you peel off a sticker. This changes the angle of the hairs, and they let go instantly.

I look at the bottom of his feet after he walks through some dust. They are perfectly clean! The way his hairs are shaped makes the dirt fall right off. He never has to worry about his "sticky shoes" getting dirty or losing their power.

I see it start to rain. The glass gets wet and slippery. The gecko doesn't care! His special hairs can still find the glass even through the water. He is the ultimate all-weather climber.

I see a fly on the wall too. The fly uses sticky liquid to stay on. But the gecko is different; he uses physics and his amazing "hair-power." He is one of the coolest engineers in the animal kingdom.

Suddenly, the gecko sees a bug. Zip! He runs across the ceiling faster than I can move my camera. He is a master of gravity. He reminds me that sometimes the biggest secrets in nature are found in the smallest, invisible details.
