A classic fairy tale retold, where a princess learns the value of honesty and keeping her promises after reluctantly befriending a talking frog who retrieves her lost golden ball. It's a heartwarming story about courage, kindness, and the magic of true intentions.
Beside a deep stone well in the royal garden, the princess watched in shock as her golden ball slipped from her hands and dropped.
Plop. It vanished into the dark water.
“Who will help me get it back?” she cried.
The water rippled, and a small green head popped up.
“I can help you,” said a frog with bright amber eyes, “but you must promise to be my friend and take me home with you.”
“I promise!” the princess said quickly.
The frog dove down. Bubbles rose to the surface.
Soon he came back, pushing the golden ball up to the edge.
The princess snatched it, whispered a quick “Thank you!” and ran toward the castle without looking back.
That evening, as lanterns glowed in the dining hall, there came a soft knock, knock at the great door.
A servant bowed to the king. “Your Majesty, there is a frog at the door. He says he is the princess’s guest.”
The king turned to his daughter. “Did you make a promise to this frog?”
The princess’s cheeks turned pink. “Yes… Father.”
“Then you must keep your word,” the king said gently but firmly. “A promise is a serious thing.”
The doors opened, and the frog hopped across the shiny floor.
“Good evening!” he called cheerfully. “Your table smells wonderful.”
The princess wrinkled her nose for a moment.
Then she remembered the deep well, the golden ball, and her father’s eyes.
Slowly, she picked up the frog, and set him on the edge of her own golden plate.
He ate politely—tiny bites, quiet sips.
After dinner, the frog looked up at her. “Now,” he said softly, “may I go to your room to rest, as you promised?”
The princess felt a knot in her stomach. She really did not want a cold, damp frog in her room…
But a promise was a promise. She carried him upstairs and placed him on a small velvet pillow by her bed.
“Thank you for keeping your word,” the frog said, his eyes warm.
“That is real courage—doing what you said you would do, even when it is hard.”
In the morning, sunlight streamed through the curtains. The princess sat up and blinked. The frog was gone.
There stood a young prince, smiling kindly. “An evil sorcerer’s spell turned me into a frog,” the prince explained.
“Only kindness and a promise kept without prejudice from a stranger—could break it.”
From that day on, the well in the garden always seemed to shine with a gentle, smiling light.
Whenever the princess played with her golden ball, another happy laugh seemed to echo up from the water,
as if the well itself remembered: Kindness and keeping your word can change everything.
