Mai and the Beat of Life
Join Mai, the doctor-in-training, as she explores the amazing world of the human heart! This engaging story explains how the heart works as a pump, the journey of blood through the body, and simple ways to keep it strong and healthy through food and exercise. Perfect for young, curious minds.
Hello! This is Mai. Today, she is wearing a Stethoscope around her neck. She wants to listen to a very special sound: Lub-dub, lub-dub. It is the sound of the Heart!
The heart is not a shape like a Valentine's card; it is a strong Muscle about the size of your Fist. It works non-stop from the moment you are born until you are very old.
Your heart is a Pump. Its job is to push Blood through your whole body. The blood carries oxygen and food to your brain, your toes, and everywhere in between!
The blood travels on "roads" called Vessels. Arteries are the red roads that carry fresh oxygen away from the heart. Veins are the blue roads that bring the blood back to the heart to get more oxygen.
Inside the heart, there are four rooms called Chambers. There are two at the top and two at the bottom. They take turns filling up with blood and squeezing it out like a sponge!
To keep the blood moving in the right direction, the heart has Valves. These are like little Doors that snap shut after the blood passes through. This is what makes the lub-dub sound Mai hears!
When Mai sits quietly, her heart beats Slowly. But when she runs, jumps, or dances, her muscles need more oxygen. Her heart starts to beat Fast to send more blood to her legs!
Mai learns how to feel her Pulse. By placing two fingers on her wrist, she can feel her heart working. Every "thump" she feels is one beat of her amazing heart.
To keep her heart strong, Mai eats Healthy Food. She loves green vegetables, colorful fruits, and nuts. These foods keep her "roads" clean so the blood can flow easily.
The heart is a muscle, so it needs Exercise! Playing tag, swimming, and riding a bike make the heart pump harder and stay strong. A strong heart means a healthy body.
Did you know that Happiness is good for the heart? Laughing with friends and feeling loved can actually help your heart stay healthy. Kindness is the best medicine!
Mai is so glad she learned about her heart. It is the engine that keeps her alive and playing. How many times can you feel your heart beat in one minute?
