Hello! This is Mai. Today, Mai is holding a tiny, dry bean in her hand. It looks like a little brown pebble, but Mai knows a secret: inside this hard shell is a Sleeping Giant. Today, she is learning how a tiny seed turns into a tall plant.

First, Mai learns that a seed is like a Survival Kit. Inside the hard outer shell, called the seed coat, is a tiny baby plant (the embryo) and a "lunch box" of food to help it start growing before it can reach the sun.

For a seed to wake up, it needs three things: Water, Warmth, and Air. When the soil gets warm and moist in the spring, the seed drinks up the water and begins to swell. This "waking up" process is called Germination.

The first thing to pop out of the seed is the Root. It always grows downward, even if the seed is upside down! The root acts like an anchor to hold the plant steady and like a straw to drink up water and minerals from the soil.

Next, a tiny green Shoot pushes its way up toward the light. It has to be very strong to push through the heavy dirt. Once it breaks through the surface and sees the sun, we call this tiny new plant a Seedling.

Mai notices the first leaves appearing. These leaves are the plant’s Solar Panels. They use sunlight to turn air and water into sugar. This process, called photosynthesis, is how the plant makes its own food so it can grow big and tall.

As the plant grows, it may grow Flowers. Flowers aren't just for decoration; they have a very important job. They produce nectar to attract "helpers" like bees, butterflies, and birds to visit them.

These helpers move a yellow dust called Pollen from one flower to another. This is called Pollination. Without this step, the plant would never be able to make new seeds for the next year.

Once the flower is pollinated, it begins to change. The petals may fall off, and the base of the flower grows into a Fruit or a seed pod. The fruit’s job is to protect the new seeds growing inside it.

Now, the seeds need to find a place to grow. This is called Seed Dispersal. Some seeds have "wings" to fly in the wind, some have "hooks" to hitch a ride on animal fur, and some are eaten by birds and dropped in new places.

Some seeds are very tough. They can wait for many years, or even Centuries, for the perfect weather to grow. They stay asleep in the dirt, protected by their hard coats, until the rain and sun tell them it is time to wake up.

Mai looks at her garden and sees tall sunflowers and juicy tomatoes. She realizes that every big tree and beautiful flower started as a tiny, patient seed. If you were a seed, would you want to fly in the wind or float down a river?
