Mai and the Afternoon Making a Paper Kite
Mai decides to make her own "Magic Kite" from scratch. Follow her journey as she learns about materials, structure, shapes, and balance, culminating in a triumphant flight and a sense of achievement.
Hello! This is Mai. Today, the wind is blowing softly through the trees. Whoosh-whoosh! Mai looks at the sky and has a great idea. "I want to fly a kite!" she says. But Mai doesn't buy one. She wants to make her own Magic Kite at home.
First, Mai gathers her Supplies. She learns about Materials. She finds a large sheet of purple paper, two thin bamboo sticks, some string, and colorful ribbons. "Let’s build a bird for the sky!" says Mai excitedly.
Next, Mai makes the Frame. She learns about Structure. She crosses the two sticks to make a "T" shape. Her dad helps her tie them together with a strong knot. This is the skeleton of the kite that will hold it against the wind.
Now, Mai cuts the Paper. She learns about Shapes. She cuts the purple paper into a diamond shape. She is very careful with her safety scissors. Snip, snip, snip. The paper fits perfectly over the wooden sticks.
Suddenly, it is time for Glue. She learns about Sticky. Mai puts glue along the edges of the paper and folds them over the string. "Stay tight, little kite!" whispers Mai. She waits a few minutes for the glue to dry and become strong.
Next, Mai starts to Decorate. She learns about Creativity. She uses yellow markers to draw stars and a happy sun on her kite. She wants everyone in the clouds to see her beautiful art. The kite looks bright and cheerful.
Now, Mai adds the Tail. She learns about Balance. She ties the long, colorful ribbons to the bottom of the kite. "The tail helps the kite stay steady in the air," explains Dad. The ribbons look like a long, rainbow ponytail.
Suddenly, Mai attaches the String. She learns about Control. She ties a long ball of string to the middle of the sticks. This string is the "leash" that will help Mai talk to her kite when it is very high up in the blue sky.
Next, Mai goes to the Open Field. She learns about Wind. She holds her kite up high. She feels the wind pulling on the paper. "It wants to go, Dad! It wants to fly!" shouts Mai. She starts to run as fast as she can.
Now, the kite Lifts Off. She learns about Flight. Swoosh! The purple kite catches the air and goes up, up, up! It looks like a giant purple bird dancing in the sunlight. Mai lets out more string, and the kite goes even higher.
Suddenly, the wind gets Stronger. She learns about Tension. Mai holds the string with two hands. She feels the power of the wind. She is very brave and keeps the string tight. She is the pilot of her own beautiful sky-ship.
The sun begins to Set. She learns about Landing. Mai slowly pulls the string back in. Wind, wind, wind. The kite comes down gently and lands on the soft grass. "You did a great job today, little kite," says Mai with a smile.
Finally, Mai carries her kite Home. She learns about Achievement. She made something with her own hands, and it really flew! She hangs the kite on her bedroom wall. Now she can dream about flying every single night.
Mai’s kite adventure is finished. She tells her mom, "I touched the clouds today!" She realized that With a little paper and a lot of heart, you can reach the sky. If you made a kite, would you draw a happy sun or a fast rocket ship on it?
