In the warm garden, a big red strawberry grew in the sun. It looked shiny and sweet.

Hettie the Hedgehog saw it first. Her eyes opened wide. “Oh! I want that strawberry,” she said.

She stepped closer, but she saw tiny pawprints in the soft dirt. Someone else had been here.

Hettie the Hedgehog looked around. “Who else wants the strawberry?” she wondered.

Squeaky the Squirrel peeked from a tree branch. His fluffy tail shook with excitement. He had seen the strawberry too.

“I saw it first!” Squeaky the Squirrel said. “No, I did!” Hettie the Hedgehog said as she stomped her foot.

A thump-thump sound came from a bush. Rocky the Rabbit hopped out. His nose twitched as he smelled the sweet strawberry.

The animals began to argue. “Mine!” Squeaky the Squirrel said. “Mine!” Rocky the Rabbit said. “Mine too,” Hettie the Hedgehog whispered.

The tall grass moved. A big shape came closer. Hettie the Hedgehog froze. Squeaky the Squirrel froze. Rocky the Rabbit’s ears dropped low..

A Deer stepped in. She bent her head. She sniffed the strawberry. Then she took a bite. Snap. The strawberry was gone.

The friends stared at the empty stem. No one said a word.

After a quiet moment, Hettie the Hedgehog giggled. Squeaky the Squirrel laughed. Rocky the Rabbit laughed too. Soon they were all smiling again.

“We all wanted it,” Hettie the Hedgehog said. “But the Deer was hungry. And she was faster.”

The sun went down. Fireflies blinked like tiny stars. Squeaky the Squirrel gave Hettie the Hedgehog an acorn. Rocky the Rabbit found some clover to munch.

Hettie the Hedgehog smiled. “Sharing feels nice,” she said. “Maybe even nicer than a strawberry.”
