Wilbur and Orville Wright were brilliant, busy brothers. They owned a bicycle shop, but they often gazed up, wishing they could join the birds on the wind.

"We can build a flying machine," said Wilbur. "It must be light, but strong!" "And it must have wings that catch the air, like a giant, flapping kite!" said Orville.

They worked and worked. Orville was intense, sketching every detail. He drew wings that changed shape, and he drew rudders for steering.

Wilbur, the patient builder, tested their ideas. They flew gliders on windy hills, learning how to turn and dip with the invisible air.

All their learning brought them to Kitty Hawk, a wild, windy, and lonely beach. This was the perfect place to try their greatest machine yet: the Flyer!

On a cold December morning, the air was crisp. The Flyer stood ready, made of wood and fabric and hope.

A few friends and onlookers held their breath. Would it work? Had the brothers truly solved the secret of flight?

Orville climbed aboard. Wilbur made one last check. The little engine roared to life with a sputter and a cough!

Slowly, the Flyer moved. Faster, faster... and then, with a wonderful lift, it left the sand! It flew! The world’s first successful powered flight!

For twelve short seconds, it soared. When it landed, everything had changed. Because of two brilliant brothers and a dream, the world was finally ready to touch the sky.
