I am standing on a sandy beach. I look at the giant, blue ocean. The water is cool and wavy. It looks like it is just sitting there, but the water is actually getting ready for a big trip.

I look up at the bright sun. The sun is like a big heater in the sky. It shines its warm light down on the ocean. I see the water getting warmer and warmer. Something magical is about to happen.

I look closely at the surface of the water. Tiny, invisible pieces of water start to rise into the air. This is called evaporation. The water is turning into invisible gas called water vapor. It is flying up like a ghost!

I follow the invisible water vapor high, high up. Up here, the air is very cold. The tiny water pieces start to shiver. They miss each other and decide to huddle together to stay warm.

As the water pieces huddle together, they turn back into tiny liquid drops. They grab onto little bits of dust in the air. Suddenly, I see a white, fluffy cloud. This is called condensation.

I watch the cloud grow bigger and bigger. More and more water drops join the group. The cloud turns from white to a dark, heavy gray. It looks like a giant, wet sponge in the sky.

The cloud cannot hold any more water. It is too heavy! Drip, drop, plop! The water drops start to fall. This is precipitation. I feel the cool rain hitting the ground. The plants are happy to have a drink.

I follow the rain as it lands on a tall mountain. The water gathers together and forms a small, clear stream. It runs fast over the rocks. Splash, splash! It is singing a happy song.

I move down the mountain with the stream. The stream joins a big river. The river is wide and strong. It carries the water through forests, under bridges, and past big cities.

I look at the soil near the river. Some water drops hide under the ground. They travel through the dirt to reach the roots of trees. This is how the big trees stay strong and green.

Finally, the big river reaches the end of its path. It pours all its water back into the giant, blue ocean. The water is back home! It has finished its long, long trip from the sky to the ground.

I look at the sun again. It is still shining. The water in the ocean is starting to get warm again. The journey is never-ending. The water will fly up, turn into a cloud, and rain again tomorrow.
