Barnaby, the blue-striped squirrel, counted every acorn, always in threes. One, two, three. His favorite nut pile, a mountain of crunchy goodness, was GONE! His little heart fluttered like a trapped butterfly.

He saw one shiny acorn. Then, two more! Three acorns led into the rustling leaves.

Barnaby scooted along, following the three-acorn trail. He saw fuzzy Bunny Bonnie. She nibbled a big, green leaf. “My belly rumbles,” she squeaked.

Barnaby saw three acorns near her. He shared his nuts. Bonnie’s ears twitched with joy.

He scampered on, following three more acorns. Next, he found busy Beaver Bob. Bob chewed a fallen branch. His dam was leaking! “It’s cold in here,” Bob chattered.

Barnaby saw three acorns beside him. He gave Bob some nuts. Bob’s tail slapped the water, happy.

Still, Barnaby followed the three-acorn path. He saw sleepy Owl Ollie. Ollie blinked, his eyes droopy. “I’m so hungry,” Ollie hooted.

Barnaby noticed three acorns near Ollie. He offered his last nuts. Ollie spread his wings, thankful.

Barnaby had no nuts left. But his heart felt warm and big, bigger than any nut pile.

He looked at his happy friends. That was better than all the acorns in the world.
