Toby and the Top-Secret Sleepover

Toby sat by the window, clutching his favourite teddy, Pip. Tonight was the big sleepover at Grandma Audrey's house, and a small, fizzy worry was swirling in his tummy. "It's just one night," he whispered to Pip, "but what if I miss Mum and Dad too much?"

Mum knelt down and tucked a curl behind Toby's ear. "Grandma Audrey is a super-duper fun expert, remember? And your special teddy, Pip, is coming too. We’ll be home right after breakfast, and you’ll have so many stories to tell."

When they pulled up to Grandma Audrey’s little cottage, the familiar scent of lavender and biscuits filled the air. Toby paused at the doorstep, his shoes planted firmly on the mat. Sniff, sniff. The worry in his tummy wiggled a little harder.

Whoosh! The door swung open and there was Grandma Audrey, all smiles and soft woolly cardigan. "My little adventurer has arrived!" she boomed, scooping Toby up in a big hug. "I have a top-secret mission for you tonight, Toby, but first... biscuits!"

The top-secret mission was to help Grandma Audrey build the 'Fortress of Fun' in the living room. They draped blankets over chairs and piled up cushions until it was the cosiest castle in the land. Toby giggled so hard his fizzy worry popped, just for a moment.

Later, tucked up in the spare room—which Grandma Audrey called the 'Star-Gazer Room'—they read a funny book about a badger who forgot his trousers. The little room had a window that looked right up at the moon, big and bright like a shiny shilling.

"Goodnight, my brave little star," Grandma Audrey whispered, giving Pip a little pat. As she closed the door, Toby watched the shadows dance. The fizzy worry tried to come back. Wiggle, wiggle. He held Pip tight, so tight his knuckles turned white.

Then Toby remembered. Grandma Audrey had left a little, tick-tock clock on the bedside table. Tick-tock, tick-tock. It sounded like a tiny, gentle heart beating, reminding him that even though the house was different, it was full of familiar love.

The next sound Toby heard wasn't a tick-tock, but the clatter of a spoon on a bowl! He woke up. The sun was streaming in. He had done it! The whole night, all by himself! Toby felt a new feeling now: a fizz of pride!

Grandma Audrey was already in the kitchen, making Toby’s favourite blueberry pancakes. "You were the best sleepover guest ever," she said, flipping a perfect circle. Toby took a bite and sighed happily. "Can I come back again next month?"
