Hello! This is Leo. Today is a very noisy and exciting day because Leo is attending his very first Music Class at the community center. He walks into a bright room filled with colorful mats and a big basket full of strange, shiny objects.

The teacher, Miss Harmony, starts by asking everyone to sit in a Circle. Leo sits between two new friends. They start by clapping their hands to the beat of their names. "Le-o!" he claps twice. He learns that everything has a Rhythm, even his own name!

Miss Harmony brings out the Egg Shakers. They are small plastic eggs that make a "chicka-chicka" sound. Leo shakes his up high, then down low, and then behind his back. He is learning how to control his movements to match the speed of the music.

Next, it is time for the Drums. Leo gets a small bongo drum. At first, he hits it very hard—BANG!—but then he learns to use just his fingertips for a soft tap. He discovers that different parts of the drum make different sounds, from deep thumps to high clicks.

The class practices Dynamics. Miss Harmony whispers, "Play as quiet as a mouse," and Leo taps his drum very gently. Then she shouts, "Play as loud as a lion!" and the whole room fills with a giant, happy noise. Leo loves learning the difference between Loud and Soft.

Miss Harmony plays a song on her guitar and tells the children to Freeze whenever the music stops. Leo dances in circles, but when the guitar goes silent, he stands perfectly still like a statue. This game helps him become a much better Listener.

Now, it is time for the Xylophones. Leo uses a wooden mallet to hit the colorful metal bars. Ding, dong, dang! He notices that the long bars make low sounds and the short bars make high sounds. He is learning how to make a simple melody for the first time.

The teacher brings out a giant, colorful Parachute. All the children hold the edges and bounce soft balls on top while singing a song. Leo has to move his arms up and down in time with his friends. He learns that music is even better when you Cooperate with others.

Leo is curious about a tall instrument in the corner. It is a Double Bass. Miss Harmony lets him pluck one thick string. Boing! The vibration is so strong that Leo can feel it in his tummy. He realizes that music is something you can feel as well as hear.

Next, the children learn a Action Song. They have to touch their heads, shoulders, knees, and toes while singing. Leo giggles because the song gets faster and faster! This helps him coordinate his brain, his voice, and his body all at once.

At the end of class, everyone picks one instrument for a Grand Parade. Leo chooses a pair of silver cymbals. They march around the room in a line, crashing and banging happily together. Leo feels like he is part of a real marching band!

The music class is finished. Leo helps put the shakers and drums back into the big basket. He feels energized and happy. On the walk home, he hears music everywhere—in the chirping birds and the rhythm of his own footsteps. If you could join Leo’s band, which instrument would you want to play?
