Hello! This is Leo. Today, he is sitting very still on his back porch with a pair of black binoculars and a small notebook. He is participating in the Great Backyard Bird Count. His mission is to watch, identify, and count every bird that visits his garden for one hour.

First, Leo prepares his Bird Station. He makes sure the bird feeder is filled with sunflower seeds and the birdbath has fresh, clean water. He learns that to see nature, you must first be a Good Host. If you provide food and water, the birds will naturally come to visit you.

Next, Leo learns about The Art of Silence. He realizes that if he runs around or talks loudly, the birds will be frightened and fly away. He practices sitting as still as a statue. He learns that the quieter he is, the more the world of nature opens up around him.

The first visitor arrives! It is a small bird with a bright red chest. Leo looks through his binoculars and identifies it as a Robin. He learns about Color Identification. He carefully draws a red circle in his notebook and puts a tally mark next to it.

Suddenly, a flash of bright blue zips past. It is a Blue Jay. It makes a loud jay-jay sound. Leo notices that different birds have different "Voices." He is learning about Acoustics, realizing he can identify some birds just by listening to their unique songs.

Leo notices a very tiny bird hovering near the flowers. Its wings move so fast they are a blur! It is a Hummingbird. He learns about Metabolism. This tiny bird needs to eat very often because it uses so much energy to fly. He records "1 Hummingbird" with a tiny star.

A group of brown Sparrows lands near the birdbath. They splash the water everywhere and chirp happily. Leo learns about Social Behavior. Some birds like to travel alone, while others prefer to be in a big, noisy group of friends.

Next, Leo sees a Woodpecker clinging to the side of the oak tree. Tap-tap-tap! It uses its strong beak to find bugs in the bark. Leo learns about Specialized Tools. Nature gives every animal exactly what it needs to find its favorite food and build its home.

Midway through the hour, Leo sees a large shadow on the grass. He looks up and sees a Hawk circling high in the sky. All the little birds go very quiet and hide in the bushes. Leo learns about Safety Instincts. The garden has its own rules for staying hidden and safe.

Leo uses a Field Guide book to look up a bird he doesn't recognize. It has a black "cap" on its head and says chick-a-dee-dee. He learns its name is a Chickadee. He is practicing his Research Skills, turning a mystery into new knowledge.

The hour is almost up. Leo counts his tally marks. He has seen six different kinds of birds and a total of fifteen feathered friends! He feels a sense of Scientific Discovery. He realizes that his backyard is much busier and more exciting than he ever imagined.

Leo finishes his report and sends the data to a website where real scientists collect the information. He learns that even a child can be a Citizen Scientist. His small count helps people understand how birds are doing all across the country.

Leo’s bird adventure is finished. He puts his binoculars away, but he keeps his ears open for the songs in the trees. He realizes that every bird has a story to tell. If you were watching birds, would you want to see a tiny, fast hummingbird or a big, powerful hawk?
