When the sun sank low and the whole world began to yawn, one small owl opened her big, round eyes. While everyone else was growing sleepy, she was just waking up — because night was her very favorite time.

Down below, the day creatures curled up to sleep. The rabbits snuggled into their burrow, the deer nestled in the ferns, and the little birds tucked into their nest. “Sleep softly,” the little owl whispered, and opened her wings.

Up, up the little owl floated into the cool, quiet air, as light as a falling feather. Below her, the whole forest lay hushed and silver in the moonlight.

She glided over the tall pine trees, where the night wind hummed the gentlest tune. Soft and low, she hummed along. Hoo… hoo…

She circled above the pond, round and bright as a coin of moonlight, where the frogs had tucked in their toes and the fish lay still and dreaming.

She drifted over the meadow, where the fireflies blinked slow and sleepy, like tiny stars wishing everyone goodnight.

High above, the moon smiled down, and the stars came out one by one. She counted them softly… one… two… three… and more than she could ever count.

Then she heard a tiny sound. A little mouse was awake, a bit afraid of the dark. So she perched close beside him and sang her softest song — a lullaby just for the night. Soon the little mouse was fast asleep.

All through the woods, the sleeping creatures breathed slow and warm, dreaming their sweetest dreams — safe and snug beneath the little owl’s gentle, watchful eyes.

At last, the sky turned soft and pink, and the very first morning bird began to stir. The little owl gave a great, cozy yawn. Her long, lovely night was done.

She tucked her head beneath her wing on her favorite branch, warm and content. So close your eyes now, little one. The night is gentle and quiet… and someone is always watching over your dreams. Sleep softly.
