Story Details

“Wham! There was a loud crash. At the hospital, the doctors told Somadina’s parents that her world would be a little different.”

“Somadina’s mommy had been in an accident while she was still in her tummy, and it made her senses mix up. But Somadina was strong, and she had hope.”

“Every day, she sat in class trying to understand, but the shapes and letters on the board were blurry.”

“Her classmates could see and touch things she couldn’t, and it made her feel frustrated.”

“One day, when the teacher asked her to draw, Somadina stood up. Her fists clenched in anger. She picked up a crayon and threw it at the board.”

“‘I can’t do this!’ she cried and ran out of the room.”

“One sunny afternoon, Somadina sat in her room, staring at a big, blank canvas. Lizzy, her cat with the softest fur, purred beside her.”

“Somadina loved colors, but there was one little problem—she couldn’t tell them apart! Red, blue, yellow—they all looked the same to her.”

“Lizzy nudged her with a soft paw. ‘Purr!’ Lizzy seemed to say, as if to suggest, ‘Let’s try anyway!’”

“Somadina smiled. ‘Okay, Lizzy. Let’s give it a go!’”

“She dipped her tiny hands into the first jar of paint. It felt cold and squishy. ‘This feels like... happiness!’ she said, smearing it across the canvas.”

“Next, she grabbed another jar and smeared the new color over the first. ‘This one feels like... sadness,’ she said, making swirling shapes.”

“Lizzy decided to join in, dipping her little paw into a jar and leaving tiny prints at the right edge of the canvas.”

“The room became a rainbow of giggles, paint splashes, and paw prints. Somadina forgot all about her worries as she and Lizzy created a masterpiece.”

“When her parents peeked into the room, they gasped. ‘Wow, Somadina! This is amazing!’ said her mom.”

“Somadina tilted her head. ‘Really? But... I don’t even know what it looks like.’”

“Her dad knelt beside her. ‘It doesn’t matter, sweetie. Your painting shows how you feel, and that’s what makes it special.’”

“Her parents helped her hang the painting in their living room. Somadina beamed with pride as she looked at her work.”

“Outside, Somadina sat with Lizzy by her side, watching as the evening sun painted the sky in oranges and purples.”

“She held up her paint-covered hands and whispered, ‘I’ve always had my hands—and Lizzy, too.’”
