Story Details

At Windmere Academy, the clock struck midnight. Kit pressed her hand against the cold stone wall, heart thumping like a wild drum.

She followed the older students through a hidden door cloaked in shadows. This was her first Midnight Lesson.

Inside, the room smelled of old paper and flickering candles. The air was thick, almost buzzing with secrets. The teacher was there—a tall figure draped in a dark cloak, face hidden in the dim light. "Tonight," the teacher whispered, "we learn ideas too dangerous for daylight."

The first puzzle appeared—a scroll covered in strange marks that danced when Kit blinked. She squinted, trying to trace the glowing symbols with her fingers. "These letters change when you touch them," she muttered, her voice shaky but curious.

Next, they chanted an ancient riddle, words spilling like smoke curling into the cold air. Kit shivered as the words seemed to wrap around her like a fog. The riddle twisted and turned, tangled like roots underground. She bit her lip, pushing deep to follow its path.

Then, a puzzle written in the curling smoke of the candles. The shapes shifted, forming pictures that flickered and vanished. Kit stretched out a hand, feeling the warm, soft haze slip through her fingers. The mystery tightened around her heart.

Outside, the old statue in the courtyard seemed to lean closer, its stone eyes glinting in the moonlight. Kit wondered—was it watching, waiting? She looked back at the others, their faces pale and tight with worry.

Questions clawed inside her. Why hide in the dark? Why no one returned from last year’s lessons? But the pull to learn was stronger than fear.

At last, Kit solved the final riddle. The teacher's cloak slipped back, revealing a faint smile. "You’ve stepped beyond the day," the teacher said softly.

Kit felt a strange strength fill her. The night wasn’t frightening anymore. It was hers.

The secret class vanished with the first light, but Kit stayed—leaning against the cold stone wall—ready for whatever came next.
