Long ago, in a quiet forest, lived a gentle rabbit. He shared his home with a monkey, a jackal, and an otter.

Each day, the animals gathered food and helped one another. The rabbit ate only grass and leaves, but he was kind to all.

One day, the god of the moon decided to test their hearts. He took the shape of an old man and wandered the forest, pretending to be weak and hungry.

First, he met the otter. “Do you have something to eat?” asked the man.

The otter ran and found some fish near the river. “Take these,” he said.

Next, the man met the monkey. “Do you have something to eat?”

The monkey gave him sweet fruit from the tall trees. “Here,” he said with a grin.

Then came the jackal. “Do you have something to eat?”

The jackal brought back some meat and bread. “Take all of it,” he said.

At last, the man met the rabbit. But the rabbit had only grass.

“I eat leaves,” said the rabbit. “But you cannot eat that. So I will offer myself. You may eat me if it helps you live.”

The god was silent. Then he said, “Build a fire.”

The rabbit gathered sticks. The fire glowed red. The rabbit closed his eyes and jumped.

But he felt no pain. The flames did not burn.

The god caught him gently in the air. “You are truly wise and good,” he said.

The forest grew quiet. Even the trees seemed to listen.

“To honor your kindness,” said the god, “I will place your image in the moon.”

He lifted the rabbit high, and the moonlight glowed bright.

That night, the other animals looked up and saw a soft rabbit shape in the moon.

And even today, if you look up on a quiet night, you might see him too—the wise little rabbit who gave everything.
