Story Details

Hello, I’m Zest! I’m 10 years old and love exploring the world. New countries make my heart dance with colorful costumes! My compass is buzzing: I’m in Nigeria! At the Calabar Carnival, dancers whirl and drums echo with excitement. I meet Tobi; his black hair shines under a green hat, and his eyes sparkle with joy. “Jara!” he shouts, smiling. “What’s Jara?” I ask. “Extra joy!” he says. A wave of enthusiasm fills me, and I dive into Nigeria’s vibrant festival.

In Osogbo, at the Osun Sacred Grove temple, Tobi and I watch dancers dressed in white. “The Osun river brings blessings!” he says, lighting a lamp. I put on my beaded charm, feeling peace surround me. Nigeria’s sacred tradition calms my soul, as if I’m touching the heart of nature.

In Lagos, in the courtyard of a naming ceremony, Tobi and I listen to families singing joyfully. “Baby names are chosen with great care!” he says, smiling. Colorful fabrics gleam in the sunlight, filling me with happiness. Nigeria’s strong family bonds warmly embrace my heart.

In a small kitchen in Abuja, Tobi and I cook jollof rice together. “The spices are magical!” he says, stirring the tomatoes. The delightful aromas tease my nose, stirring my curiosity. Nigeria’s unique flavors delight my palate, and our table is filled with friendship and joy.

We enter an adire dyeing workshop in Abeokuta. Tobi carefully draws patterns with blue dye. “Every cloth tells a story!” he says. I try making my own design and am amazed by the art I create. Nigeria’s colorful art captivates my eyes, each pattern carrying a culture.

At the Durbar Festival in Kano, Tobi and I watch the magnificent procession of horsemen. “This is our pride!” he says, dancing with excitement. Surrounded by the crowd’s applause, my excitement peaks. Nigeria’s grandeur conquers my heart, where history and tradition shine together.

In Enugu, we are at the Igbo masked dance stage. Tobi dresses me in a colorful agbada. “Masks call the spirits, jara!” he says, spinning joyfully. I join the dance, and happiness fills me. Nigeria’s dance revives my soul, every movement telling a story.

At the Ankara fabric market in Ibadan, Tobi and I wander among vibrant fabrics. “Patterns are our story!” he says with a grin. I choose a fabric, and a deep joy fills me. Nigeria’s lively colors brighten my heart, each cloth a piece of life.

On the street of Lagos’ Eyo Festival, Tobi and I watch dancers wearing white masks. “This brings blessings, jara!” he says, clapping. I wave to them with love, hope and joy rising inside me. Nigeria’s spirit wraps my heart tightly, whispering of a hopeful future.

In an Afrobeat music studio in Abuja, Tobi and I get lost in the rhythm. “Fela’s spirit is here!” he says, playing the drums. I dance, filled with devotion. Nigeria’s music frees my soul, my heart beating to the rhythm.

At the Argungu Fishing Festival in Kebbi, Tobi and I watch the fishing contest. “This tradition is jara!” he says, casting his net. I join the crowd’s excitement, applauding with joy. Nigeria’s lively culture lifts my spirit, a celebration in harmony with nature.

In Igbo-Ukwu, we visit a bronze casting workshop. Tobi shows me ancient techniques. “Every statue holds history!” he says, preparing the mold. I try it myself and am amazed by the creation. Nigeria’s art enchants my soul, building a bridge between past and present.

In Lagos, we are at an akara kitchen. Tobi and I fry bean paste together. “The taste of the streets!” he says, smiling. I take a bite, and joy fills me. Nigeria’s flavors delight my palate, energizing me with the spirit of the streets.

In Lagos, Tobi gives me a beaded bracelet as a gift. “Don’t forget Jara!” he smiles. I wave with a paper lantern, filled with gratitude. My compass buzzes: “Come on world, what’s next?” My adventure continues, with Nigeria’s colors shining in my heart.
