Story Details

Long ago, in a faraway land, there lived a king named Midas. He was rich beyond measure, yet he still wished for more.

King Midas loved gold more than anything in the world. He filled his palace with golden cups, golden chairs, and golden statues.

But even with all his treasures, he was not truly happy. The only thing that made him smile was his daughter, a kind girl who loved flowers and sunshine.

One morning, as Midas walked in his garden, he met a strange old man. The man thanked the king for his kindness and promised him a reward.

“What do you desire most?” asked the man. Without thinking, Midas said, “I wish that everything I touch would turn to gold!”

The old man smiled gently. “Your wish is granted,” he said, and disappeared in a shimmer of light.

At first, Midas was overjoyed. He touched a stone—and it turned to gold! He touched a rose—and it turned to gold!

Laughing, the king hurried back to his palace, turning every door, chair, and table into shining treasure. Gold glimmered everywhere he went.

But when he sat down to eat, his bread and fruit turned to gold in his hands. He could not eat or drink anything at all!

Then his daughter ran to him with open arms. “Father!” she cried. When he hugged her—she, too, turned into a golden statue.

The king’s heart broke. He fell to his knees and begged the gods to take away his terrible gift.

The gods took pity on him. They told Midas to wash his hands in the river near his palace. When he did, the golden touch vanished—and his daughter came back to life. From that day on, King Midas learned that love is worth more than all the gold in the world.
