Max and his family pick out instruments by drawing a number that matches how many syllables are in the instrument’s name. Max and his family had a big decision to make! Who would play which instrument in their family band? There were seven instruments to choose from: drums, harp, guitar, trumpet, violin, xylophone, and harmonica.
"We need a fair way to choose," said Mia, the mom. "How about we draw numbers from the hat? The number you draw will be the number of syllables in your instrument's name!"
Tom was the first to draw. He pulled out a 1. "I get one syllable," he said, smiling. "I’ll pick the drums!" *Drums*
Mia drew next. She pulled out a 2. "Two syllables! I choose the guitar," she said with a happy grin. *Gui- tar*
Grandma Rose drew third. "Three syllables," she said. She thought for a moment. "I’ll play the violin!" *Vi- o- lin*
Lily eagerly grabbed the next number. It was a 1. "I get one syllable too!" she said. "I’ll play the harp." *Harp*
Ben, the dad, drew next. He picked a 2. "Two syllables," he said. "I’ll take the trumpet." *Trum- pet*
Max was excited to draw. He picked a 3. "I get three syllables!" he exclaimed. "I want the xylophone!" * Xy- lo- phone*
Grandpa Fred drew last. He picked a 4. "Four syllables! That must be the harmonica," he said with a big laugh. *Har- mon- i- ca*
Now that everyone had picked their instruments, the family gathered together in the living room. They were ready to play music together.
Tom started playing the drums with a loud thump! Mia strummed her guitar, making beautiful melodies.
Grandma Rose played the violin, its strings singing sweetly. Lily’s harp made a soft, peaceful sound.
Ben played his trumpet, its bright notes filling the air. Max hit the keys of the xylophone, making a cheerful tune.
Finally, Grandpa Fred played the harmonica, its gentle hum rounding out their family band. Together, they made a wonderful symphony of sounds.
