Bringing the Light to Mia

Golden sunlight spilled over the playground, making the slide hot to touch. But for Leo, the park felt grey. He kicked a stone across the empty sandbox. The swings were no fun without Mia's laugh pushing him higher. He looked at her house, where the curtains were drawn like a sleepy eye
Mia was sick. Her room was quiet and dim, and she couldn't come out to play. "If Mia can't come to the light," Leo whispered to a ladybug, "I'll bring the light to her!" He had a plan.
His first idea was to trap it. He opened his shiny metal lunchbox and aimed it at the brightest sunbeam he could find. He snapped it shut. Got it! He ran all the way to Mia's front door, clutching his prize.
He tiptoed into Mia's quiet room. "I brought you the sun!" he whispered. He opened the lunchbox with a flourish. Inside, there was only a half-eaten apple and darkness. Leo's shoulders slumped. The light hadn't stayed caught.
He sat back on the grass, defeated. A bright yellow buttercup bloomed by his sneaker. He picked it. It didn't glow, but it felt like a tiny piece of sun he could hold in his hand. That gave him a new idea. A better idea.
He didn't need to catch the light. He needed to collect things that felt like light. He found a smooth, white pebble from the creek, shiny and bright. He drew a picture of a ladybug, its red wings like tiny jewels.
He placed the buttercup, the pebble, and the ladybug drawing into an empty shoebox. It wasn't a sunbeam, but it was full of the sunny day. He raced back to Mia's house, his heart thumping with hope.
He gently gave her the box. Mia slowly lifted the lid. Her eyes widened. She touched the soft buttercup, traced the smooth pebble, and smiled at the cheerful drawing. A real, warm smile. It was the brightest thing Leo had seen all day.
