The Little Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark

It’s getting dark. Little Owl “Oli” pulled back into her tree hollow and whispered, “The night is coming again… and I’m so afraid of the dark.”

“Come on, Oli!” her friends called. But Oli shook her head and hugged her feathers tight. “It’s too dark out there. I can’t see what’s ahead.”

She closed her eyes, and all she could see was black. Black as a deep, deep well—black enough to swallow dreams.

Suddenly, a little light flew into the hollow. “Hi! I’m LianLian,” it said. “You fly at night?” Oli gasped. “Of course! Night is my favorite stage to shine.” the firefly blinked.

“Don’t be afraid, I’ll light up a little path for you.” said LianLian softly. Oli took a deep breath, spread her wings— and for the very first time, she flew into the night.

Under the stars, tree shadows danced on the ground. Oli looked down in fright. “What’s that? A monster’s shadow?” LianLian chuckled, “That’s your wings, silly—they’re dancing with the moonlight.”

Frogs croaked, crickets chirped. Oli perked up her ears. “So many sounds! It’s so noisy!” LianLian laughed, “That’s the night’s concert! Listen—there’s a rhythm!” Oli flapped her wings, joining the beat.

Moonlight fell upon the garden. White petals glowed softly. “Do flowers bloom at night?” “Of course, Some flowers shine only for the night.” said LianLian with a smile.

Oli flew higher and higher. For the first time, she saw the whole sky full of stars. “So beautiful…” she whispered. The night wasn’t a monster after all— it was a blanket full of stars.

“Oli! You’re flying!” her friends called in surprise. “Yes, I found out the night can shine too.” Oli laughed.

The sky was turning pale. Oli and LianLian sat side by side on a branch. “Thank you, LianLian.” “Thank you, I’ve never seen such a beautiful sunrise.” LianLian smiled.

Oli flew back to her tree hollow. She smiled and looked at the night sky. From that night on, she was never afraid of the dark again. Because she knew— the night isn’t lonely, it just needs a little light.
