Story Details

Lily’s favorite red ball, the one with glitter that sparkled like tiny stars, bounced right over Farmer McGregor’s tall, grumpy fence. Thump! It landed in a field of towering, tickly sunflowers. A shiver zipped down Lily’s spine. Farmer McGregor always yelled about his sunflowers.

She peeked through a gap in the fence. The sunflowers loomed, much taller than her, their yellow heads swaying like giant sleepy eyes. Her red ball was a tiny dot, lost in a sea of green. “Oh, dear!” she whispered. “My sparkling ball!”

Suddenly, a fluffy field mouse scurried past. It twitched its nose. Lily had an idea! “Little mouse, oh little mouse,” she whispered, “could you find my glittery red ball in that tall, tall field?” The mouse squeaked, then zipped into the sunflowers. Moments later, it popped back out, shaking its head. Too big! Too tall!

Next, a busy bumblebee buzzed by, its little legs covered in yellow fluff. “Busy bee, oh busy bee,” Lily pleaded, “could you fly above the tall, tall sunflowers and spot my sparkly red ball?” The bee wiggled its antennae, then zoomed up, up, up! It circled once, twice, then zipped back down, shaking its tiny head. Too many! Too yellow!

Then, a chirpy robin landed on the fence post, tilting its head. “Sweet robin, oh sweet robin,” Lily begged, “could you whistle a song so loud that it tickles the tall, tall sunflowers until they wiggle and show my sparkly red ball?” The robin puffed out its chest and sang a beautiful, loud song. The sunflowers swayed and rustled, but the ball stayed hidden. Too deep! Too green!

Just as a tear started to well in Lily’s eye, a big, bouncy gust of wind swirled through the field. Whoosh! The wind whistled, rumbled, and pushed at the tall, tall sunflowers. They bent and bowed, and right there, in a little clearing, was Lily’s sparkling red ball!

She gasped, flung open the gate, and scooped it up. Her heart thumped with joy. Her glittery ball was safe!
