Story Details

Pip was a pink penguin. He loved numbers. Fish were secret math whizzes, he thought.

Dinner was ready. Pip had many little fish. He wanted groups of three. This was his plan.

He pushed three fish together. Zip! One fish wiggled away.

"Oh, no!" cried Pip. "A mathematical meltdown!" He flapped his pink wings.

Pip tried again. He lined up three fish. Plink! Plop! Two fish jumped out. They splashed his fluffy face.

"This is impossible!" he wailed. "The numbers are broken!" His tummy rumbled. He felt very sad.

Then he saw more fish. He tried another group. Five fish this time. He forgot his rule. "One, two, three," he counted. "Wait! Too many!"

The fish swam in circles. Pip spun around, too. He felt dizzy. His fish-counting was a mess.

A big, old seal watched him. The seal chuckled. "Just eat them, little one," he rumbled softly.

Pip stopped spinning. He looked at the fish. He looked at the seal. "Eat them?" he squeaked.

He picked up a fish. Then another. He ate them down.

"Oh, the simplicity!" Pip shouted. He smiled a big, pink smile. "My-stery of the numbers!" He ate all his fish. No more math problems.
