Story Details

The sun sets behind the rice fields. Nam sits at the doorway of his bamboo hut, holding a torn book. He sighs — the world around him fades into darkness.

Nam looks up at the night sky filled with stars. “I want to learn… I want to read like the kids in the city,” he whispers. His mother gently pats his shoulder, smiling sadly. “One day, my son.”

A tiny green light flashes near his book. Then another. Fireflies! Nam’s eyes widen — “If they can shine in the dark… maybe they can help me read!”

Nam carefully takes an old egg shell from the kitchen. He whispers, “This will be your new home, little lights.” He gently places the fireflies inside, and the shell begins to glow softly like a lamp.

Nam sits on his mat, the egg lantern glowing beside him. He opens his book and starts to read — words dancing under the living light.

The next night, children from the village gather around his house. “Nam, how did you make that light?” Nam smiles shyly. “From the fireflies. They like helping me read.”

Nam teaches other kids to make their own firefly lanterns. Soon the whole village glows softly at night — tiny lights flickering like stars on Earth.

A teacher from the city visited the village and saw the glowing huts. Smiling, she said, “Even without electricity, you’ve found your own light.” Nam beamed with pride.

Days later, electricity finally arrives in the village. Nam looks at the new street light, then at his egg lantern. “You were my first star,” he says softly.
