Story Details

In the high hills of Ethiopia, where the air smells of coffee and rain, a little girl named Tsehay looked up at the sky. Tomorrow was Meskel, the Festival of Light. Every year, the people gathered in the square to light the Demera, a great bonfire that reached the heavens. But this year, Tsehay’s family’s lantern was missing its flame.

“Tsehay,” said her mother, “bring our little fire from the neighbor’s lantern before the sun goes down.” “Yes, Mama!” said Tsehay, running with a small clay bowl. But when she reached the hilltop, the wind blew hard — whoosh! — and her tiny flame went out. “Oh no,” whispered Tsehay. “How will we light our lantern now?”

She looked around. Down in the valley, small lights began to bloom candles in windows, torches by doors. The whole town shimmered like stars on earth. “If I can’t keep my flame,” she said, “I’ll follow theirs.”

Along the path, Tsehay met an old shepherd warming his hands by a lantern. “Where are you going, little sun?” he asked. “I lost my light,” Tsehay said softly. He smiled. “Then take a spark from mine — fire grows when it’s shared.”

By the time Tsehay reached the square, drums were echoing. The people sang “Meskel, Meskel!” and raised bright torches high. Priests in golden robes stood before a tall pile of wood covered in daisies and green leaves — the Demera. Tsehay held her little flame close and whispered, “Please, stay bright.”

When the torches touched the Demera, flames raced upward — whooosh! Sparks danced into the sky like a thousand tiny suns. Tsehay’s flame flickered, then blazed with new strength. “The light found me again,” she said. Her mother smiled. “And you found it.”

Later that night, when the fires were low, Tsehay’s grandmother said, “Do you know why we light the Demera?” Tsehay shook her head. “It reminds us that light always returns — to the world, to the heart, and to every soul that keeps searching.”

When the sun rose the next day, the smoke from the fire drew a golden line in the sky. Tsehay pointed up. “Look, Grandma! The light is still here.” Her grandmother smiled. “It never left, Tsehay. It just changed its shape.”

Every year, during Meskel, people in Ethiopia light fires to remember a long-ago miracle the finding of the True Cross and to celebrate how light always returns to guide us. Tsehay’s story reminds us that even when our flame goes out, we can find light again especially when we share it.
