Story Details

Pip the gnome always walked backward. Always! His tiny feet shuffled, shuffle-shuffled, never looking where they went. One day, a star tumbled from the sky. *PLINK!* It landed on the tallest mountain.

Pip shivered. He had to get it! He started his backward journey, one wobbly, backward step after another. "Oopsie!" he giggled, as he nearly tipped. He felt the pull of the ground. It was a funny feeling, this gravity!

Soon, a big, round boulder rumbled past. "Roll with me!" it boomed. Pip watched the boulder roll, roll, rolling down the hill. It moved so fast! Pip thought, *Walking backward is good, but rolling looks fun too!*

Then, a fluffy rabbit zoomed by. *Boing! Boing!* went the rabbit, hopping high. "Jump with me!" chirped the rabbit. Pip watched the rabbit bounce, bounce, bouncing over rocks. Pip thought, *Walking backward is good, but bouncing looks fun too!*

Up and up, Pip waddled backward. He wobbled. He shuffled. He even tried a tiny backward hop, *boing!* He tried a small backward roll, *rumble!* The mountain grew steeper. The star shimmered, closer now. Pip knew his backward steps were slow, but they were *his* steps.

He reached the top! He carefully picked up the shimmering star. It felt warm in his hand. He had done it, one backward step at a time.
